Michael Carrick was famed for his passing 

as a player, but as a manager, he started with

 a dummy that fooled everyone. Manchester

 United's caretaker manager began by declaring

 that his values were "quite similar" to those

 of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was fired.

 Unai Emery, the Villarreal manager, agreed

 it was difficult to guess who Carrick would

 play in his first game in charge, but he predicted

 Harry Maguire, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Bruno

 Fernandes to start. 

Then Carrick dropped Fernandes, who 

had been such a talisman for Solskjaer that

 he had appeared in 58 of United's 61 games

 last season and all 17 this season. Fast forward

 five days, and Thomas Tuchel may have 

been taken aback by Carrick's second selection

. Fernandes reappeared, but this time 

he was not alone.
