Breaking news: Striker with 305 club goals says it have been a dream to sign for Manchester United.
Wayne Rooney's dominance overshadowed
every England forward in the 2000s until
his retirement. When it came to finding
a backup, the Three Lions turned to
Jermain Defoe.
Defoe, 39, announced his retirement from
football this week, and in an interview
with Sky Sports, he admitted that one of
his few 'what ifs' was missing out on a
move to Manchester United.
"I was connected with Man United," Defoe
revealed to Sky Sports. With Sir Alex
Ferguson and all the trophies they won,
that would have been a dream."
Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick,
Defoe's former West Ham teammates,
also wound up at United via Leeds and
Tottenham, and went on to win the Champions
League and many Premier League titles.
United was the winning team.
